Cover Song: Journal 4/20/06
Alright gang… protools officially sucks. Those of you not familiar with this recording program, here’s the rundown:Â
1. It’s moderately expensive considering it’s just computer software and a box to plug in your guitar.Â
2. If you don’t have just the right computer specs to run the program, it’ll give you an instant migrain.Â
3. The industry considers it a standard in music recording, so you pretty much have no choice but to learn the damn thing.Â
4. I think mine has a personal vendetta against me.
Protools has all these crazy little plug-ins that make your guitar sound slick and your voice buttery. BUT… if I use more than 2 or 3 at the same time, my computer has this big constipated fart. And of course the song I’m working on now requires (yes, it requires!) that I use effects/plug-ins and shit. I have another hard drive on the way to act as a laxative on my poor little laptop, but until then.. this not recording anything is giving ME constipation.
So, this morning after work I said to myself, “Self… you must record something. No matter what it is… I don’t care if you make a sound clip of the Iraqi’s singing while cleaning out the shitter!” (Wow. I’ve got a major theme of feces in this blog, eh?)Â
Often, I will record a cover song just for the practice. Just for the sake of learning each instrument & vocal track and seeing just how good my ears are. I never really have the intention of releasing it. It’s an exercise of engineering, producing, musicianship, blah blah blah.
So, today, I recorded a really stripped down song by The Hush Sound. Just so my protools wouldn’t freak out, I strictly only used my condensor mic, acoustic guitar, and vocals. And in 2 hours… voila! I was relieved to have finally TOTALLY gotten through a track. Protools actually behaved itself and I slept the sleep of angels.
I haven’t decided if I should post the cover tune yet. (Because, well, it’s NOT my song.) What do you think?Â
