The Other War

Here’s the (completely watered down) situation as I see it through my American eyes:

Israel- American’s generally love them. But we don’t really know why. All we know is that they love us… and that’s usally plenty enough reason.
Lebanon- American’s have no idea who the hell they are nor do they really care.
Hezbollah- We’re still confused in pronunciation. Hizzbollah? Hezzbullah? Hazbillahbula? A small (ish) group of Lebanese militants who by day build hospitals, put kids into schools, and walk old people across the street. By night they vow to murder Israeli’s. hmmmm……

A general chronology for us average folk:

- Two Israeli soldiers are kidnapped by Hizbullah.

-Israel warns Lebanese civilians to get the hell out of dodge.

-Israel goes ape-shit on Beirut, Lebanon.

-Hizbullah launches hundreds (thousands?) of rockets (Iranian made rockets, mind you) into northern Israel.

-Israel goes ape-shit, again. And repeatedly warns Lebanese civilians to scatter like the wind.

-Hizbullah hides near or in non-combatant areas such as HOSPITALS, the U.N. building, SCHOOLS, and civilians shelters. Half the time they dress in civilian clothes. (hmm… this kinda reminds me of Iraqi insurgents.)

-Israel SWEARS that it has nothing but good intentions and is only fighting in self defense. Naturally, we trust them explicitly. I mean, c’mon! They love us!

-Hizbullah works the media. Points out how many Lebanese civilians Israel has killed. They mention nothing about basing their operations in hospitals, schools, etc. Although they do admit that most of the time they wear civilian clothing. hmmm…. Oh, and apparently they’re winning right now. http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,,1835300,00.html

My personal (American) feelings

To Israel: We understand the monumetal task you have here. Hey, we even thought we’d be able to control Iraq in the first month of our “self defense”! It would be so much easier if the enemy were more obvious… ya know.. like, NOT wearing civilian clothes or were hiding in mosques or whatever. Anyways, my point is that a lot of this is going to make you look really really bad. But I believe everything happening will be the best for the future of the whole Middle East. Unfortunately, right now you need a really good PR rep.

To Hezbollah: Just come to terms that you aren’t as strong as the Israeli Army and you’re playing with a completely different set of rules than they are. (But there is something to say about a guerilla army vs. a traditional army. Look at the struggle that the U.S. army has had against guerilla fighters. U.S. vs. Vietnam or U.S. vs. Iraq) Really though, using civilians as a shield? If it really has to come to this, then why start it to begin with? Then again, I’m just beginning to understand the arab mindest (kill the jews and jewish loving Americans) and the desire to be a martyr. (Or rationlize allowing civilians to die by calling them martyrs for your cause.)

To be continued….
