So, here’s the update on that story of the contractor calling his U.S. army convoy security cowards. I’m not really sure why I’ve become so inflammed by his allegations (that the U.S. army vehicles abandoned the convoy… leaving 3 contractors dead).
This article seems more like the truth to me:

Convoy leader details Iraqi ambush
As many as 100 to 150 Iraqi insurgents attacked a supply convoy escorted by Virginia Army National Guard soldiers last year, the convoy commander estimates.
[...]
Hand grenades, gunfire from AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades rained down on the convoy from rooftops, garages, bushes and culverts along the narrow, quarter-mile-long “kill zone,” Herron said.     Â
The fire was so heavy that the Virginia gunners were firing back with automatic weapons in both hands, he said.
Three American contractor drivers died and three others were wounded in the attack on Sept. 20, 2005, as was one of Herron’s soldiers from the Guard’s 1173rd Transportation Company.
[...]
ABC News obtained a videotape showing Herron’s Humvee racing away after insurgents opened fire and disabled four Halliburton trucks.
“I do not know who the driver was of that Humvee, but he abandoned us,” civilian driver Preston Wheeler of Mena, Ark., who taped the footage, told ABC News.
[...]
The convoy was made up of 12 trucks from contractor KBR, part of the Halliburton company. Fifteen Virginia soldiers 14 men and one woman — riding in five armed and armored Army vehicles escorted the KBR trucks.
Misled by an error on their maps, the convoy turned into the village of Ad Duluiyah in the dangerous Sunni Triangle, according to Capt. Michael Waterman of Virginia Beach, who commanded the 1173rd in Iraq.
Herron, a mechanic with the National Guard in his civilian life, said: “We’re trained, after the initial enemy attack, to push right through. As quickly as you can, get everybody through and . . . return fire on that enemy. That’s what we did.”
(That’s exactly what I said!!)
Overturned tractor-trailers blocked the way for most of the convoy, including two of the Army guntrucks, which were behind Wheeler’s truck, Army officials said.
“They held off the insurgents the whole time,” Waterman said. “What was going on behind Mr. Wheeler was not depicted on the video.”
Herron’s gunner — Spc. Ryan Totten of Sugar Grove — on top of the Humvee was shot through the arm, but Totten continued to shoot back with his .50-caliber heavy machine gun.
At their “rally point” just out of the kill zone, Herron said he immediately sent one of his Humvees back to the ambush site to help protect the trapped drivers.
[...]
A Virginia Guardsman got Wheeler, who was wounded, into one of the Humvees and carried him to the rally point where he was evacuated by helicopter, Waterman said.
An Army investigation of the incident said the soldiers acted bravely and properly, an Army statement said. Complete Article Here.

You see. This is exactly how facts get twisted in the media. They tell themselves, “This back woods contractor with the one sided video must be showing the whole truth! Let’s air it without checking our stories, shall we? I mean, c’mon, the American public drools over anything remotely scandalous. It’ll be great for our ratings!”
Way to screw the National Guard soldiers, ABC News.

As you can see not only in the video but also with the Preditor, there was no return of a gun truck. Gun truck #3 made NO attempt to return ANY kind of fire. Gun Truck #3 made NO attempt to stop and pull out the two downed KBR trucks in front of them. You really need to watch the whole video.
Now you say that a gun truck was sent back in. Then did they watch as the drivers were pulled out of their trucks and 1 shot in the back of the head and my brother set on fire and drug through the streets? Your story is in fact not true. You see you and others like you want heros from this war. What happened over there that day was wrong. The militatry has G.P.S. systems inside their vehilces. They didn’t get lost because of the wrong maps. They are at fault for the murder of these 3 civilians. They need to be held accountable for this. You can pump them up as much as you want but to run from a fight!! There are many vets very upset about your boys doing this. You NEVER leave anyone behind. They did. They also left gun truck $ and # 5 behind. KBR #1 flipped over, yes. But it did NOT block the escape of the rest of the convoy. KBR #5 was shot out and blocked the convoy part way. KBR # 6 and #7 made it around and out of the area. KBR #9 stopped next to Preston Wheeler to help him out. KBR #9 was also being shot at. Gun trucks # 4 and 5 were blocked in and had NO choice but to return fire. gun trucks 1,2 and 3 left and NEVER came back. Get the truth and tell it to the American people out there. DO NOT try to cover this up anymore then it is.

Ummmm….don’t forget a truck #2 passed out from loss of blood! Truck 11 lost half his body parts that day, and truck 9 pulled off to the side, because he refused to leave his fellow men behind! Now thats a soldier for ya! He didn’t even have a gun! And they say the Armored tanks didn’t leave, ummmm…. someone forgot to tell them Sempi Fi brother.
“Get out of the kill zone” doens’t KBR contract state the military will protect them during convoy runs? It should state that if you go on a convoy run and come under attack, the military just might “bug out” on you leaving you to die, because they have their own “Rules of Engagments” It all depends on who ya get, as not all military do that….Sempi Fi brother!
this was posted to ABC blog site this month.
I was there at Anaconda when it happened. I was a member of the Outkast Express convoy team. These people had been offered assistance by our C.O and laughed him out of the room. the next day, or two days later, whatever… they most certainl DID take a wrong turn, making a right where they should have made a left, and they got those people killed. Shortly after, two members of their unit were out on a ission with us- in my humvee- learning the route, radio procedures, and mission specifics properly.
Pride and arrogance killed those guys. Period.

these so called heros of yours killed american civilians
I too was a member of the OutKast Express the team that conducted this exact mission 165 times imidiately prior to this incident. We urged the commander of this group to train along side us before taking over the mission. We offered them briefings on the rout and circumstances of the mission our SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) and enemy TTP’s (Tactics, Techniques and Procedures) we were rebuffed and degraded despite suceeding 165 time with no fatalities and a few minor injuries. they made a wrong turn down a road that we avoided 165 time and were caught in what we had termed the Vally of death. It is unconscionable that there were no charges in this matter. It was GROSS NEGLIGENCE!
Thank you for imput on this. The Marines I have spoken with that went into the town reported, ( at the most ) only a dozen or so al-qaida and iraqi police were the ambushees. there were NOT 100+ as reported by the 1173rd, or the 507th. If you look deeper into this matter you will find that the local police cheif lead this ambush, gut was not reported to the media. I say angain, ” This is a coverup that makes the U.S. look bad. Fix it before it happens AGAIN.
I have seen this ambush on youtube and it doesn’t look good for the N.A. at all.
Video doesn’t lie.
The truth is in the viedo.
Watch for your self, type in KBR Ambush
