Routines & writing & new song, oh my! Journal 10/27/06

The process of writing out tunes is finally flowing.  Out in Iraq, I had the hardest time getting anything recorded.  It was partially due to time constraints but also because of the environment.  Even though I had more than enough things to write about, it was next to impossible to actually commit any of it to “tape”.

I’m finding new tunes coming out of me so fast that I’m not even sure how to attack them.  Or rather, where to start in the massive process that is my writing habit.  Generally, I’ll just press record and start messing around with different chords and vocals.  From there I’ll go back and layer another part or work out the guitar and vox more.  Over and over and over and over.  But when I have 5 or 6 separate ideas to work with, it’s almost overwhelming.

Either way I’m finding it to be extremely soothing.  I’m not too concerned about them being complicated.  In fact, I’m really trying to write as simply as possible.  Later down the road if I can ever find some reliable and hard working bandmates, then I can put their ideas into the mix too.  Till then it’s just little ‘ol me.

But the most important thing of all is that I’m nestling into a routine.  I think the one thing that shatters soldiers coming home from extremely long deployments like the one my unit went through, is that they don’t get into a routine.  Problems start to surface when people are just sitting around doing nothing but watching t.v. and drinking beer.  That’s just too much time to think about all things past.

So, I’m making an effort to wake up by 9am every day.  Drink a gallon of coffee.  Press record until noonish.  Stop to talk to E for a bit.  Record a bit more as the mood strikes me.  Run errands in the evening and eventually meet up with someone for a chat or whatever.  Then get back home by midnight to start it all over again.  It may not be much, but it’s enough to keep my mind occupied and sane.
