Time to vent: Journal 11/6/06

Ok.  So, I’m leaving for Israel tomorow.   Today I spent doing all the stuff I needed to get done before I leave.

Issue #1:  School meeting.

I scheduled time with two of my school counselors today to make sure I’m square with my major and minor.  Everything is totally kosher (I’m practicing for Israel) with all the courses I need to graduate next spring.  My English counselor (it’s my major) tried to enroll me in a class early because I absolutely need this class in order to graduate.  As she’s pulling it up in her little computer she says to me, “umm.. I’m sorry Jami, it’s telling me you aren’t technically enrolled in the unversity.  You’ll have to take this up with admissions.”

I cross my fingers as I march over to admissions which, of course, is totally on the other side of campus.  My car is parked in a 15 minutes unloading zone and my university is notorious for giving out tickets on a whim.

When I arrive at admissions they tell me, “I’m sorry Jami, you didn’t show up for the Fall semester so we automatically took you out of the university for the whole school year.”  Huh?!  I apologized to the lady for missing the semester but I was a little busy in Iraq at the time.  I went back and talked to ANOTHER counselor who told me the same damn thing and slipped another school application towards me.

Sooo… I had to reaply AGAIN to the school for my last semester starting in the spring.  It’s a complete technicallity because it’s a public school, I left with a decent GPA, and don’t owe them any money.  Oh!  And the shitter of it all is that my enrollment for the spring is tomorow morning.  My admissions counselor told me that there was no way in hell it would be approved before then.  Now I have to beg and pleed my Liberal Arts College counselor to hold a seat in the three classes I need to graduate.  And if that doesn’t work, then I’ll be knocking on the doors of the professors actually teaching those classes.

:::  sigh  :::

Issue #2:  The cell phone.

I bought a new cell phone last weekend.  I specifically asked to make sure my new phone would work internationally.  It makes me nervous to think that I won’t have any instant form of communication.  Every single person I talked to (THREE people, to be exact) who work for my phone company tell me, “It’ll work, no problem!  Just call customer service and they’ll start the international activation for free!”

I held off on calling to get it activated until the last minute because I was told it was safer.  To open my phone up internationally would make it vulnerable, or something.  So I called today.  The night before I leave for Israel.

Basicly I was told my phone company can’t guarantee a damn thing.  They said they can open it up for international use, but it most likely won’t work.  huh???  I told them that I checked their coverage online, and it worked in 99% of Israel.  It listed fee’s and messaging rates and everything!  The customer service lady said, “yeah…. I can see how that can be deceiving.”  No kidding.

She told me they can do the international activation but I’ll have to buy a SIM card from an Israeli phone company.  Basically, my phone is useless and I still have to go thru an international phone company to get it working.  That’s just great. Cause, ya know, I’m shitty at talking to American customer service people in English… let alone a foreign one in Hebrew.

Luckily, I can use the phone at Einat’s if I have to (not to mention the internet as well).  But still!!  It sucks to be told “yes yes yes yes” up until the last minute and then it’s a bone jarring “No!!”.

Gah.  I’ll muddle my way through it all and have fun while I’m at it too.
