Apartment Hunt Woes :Journal 11/30/06
I think I underestimated how hard it would be to find an apartment that would suit me. For the last couple of days I’ve been swimming in an apartment abyss. I found one that was just the right size with the perfect rent for a lease that was exactly the length I wanted it. But it was taken from under me by someone who looked at it only a few hours before I did.
Now I’m making frantic calls to any and all of the places listed in the local papers and online. They’re all either single rooms in massive boarding houses (I can only imagine the insanity trying to share a bathroom) or apartments with rent higher than I want to pay. So, I’m starting to worry that I’ll have to decide between living with 10 other stinky loud people in a house or shell out more cash than I wanted to just to live alone and next to my university for the semester.
At first I considered living closer to Chicago as I know I’ll make my way in that direction eventually. But my university is an hour drive from the city and considering I’ll have classes from Mon-Fri plus gas prices don’t seem like they’ll ever drop again, I made the decision to move into my college town. With only 1 month before the semester starts, I’m getting a little nervous. It’s an odd time to look for an apartment since most leases are signed in the summer for 12 months. And god knows I don’t want to spend another year of my life in that little town.
In other news, I’d like to start filling out my nights playing open mics or any other place that will let me jam out a few songs. It’s really great practice and not as much pressure as putting on a long solo show. Plus, it’s nice to see who else is out there and network a little.
If you know of any places that are doing an open mic night, please let me know!
