How did I miss this?
Am I the only one that was a little shocked to learn about this?
Daylight Saving Time Extended by Four Weeks in U.S. Starting in 2007
This Sunday, the second Sunday in March (March 11), at 2 a.m., Daylight Saving Time begins in the United States. This year, Daylight Saving Time is four weeks longer than last year due passage of the Energy Policy Act in 2005. The Act, which extends Daylight Saving Time by four weeks from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, is expected to save 10,000 barrels of oil each day due to reduced use of power by businesses during daylight hours.
Our government is literally “changing time” to save a few barrels of oil? In the scope of oil usage, I don’t particularly find 10,000 barrels to be significant. We currently use over 20 MILLION! a day.
And the kicker of it all is that “Congress retains the right to resume [the] original 2005 daylight-saving time schedule once the Department of Energy is finished with its study of the new time change and reports the findings.” Northern Star
Personally, I think daylight savings time is a useless practice by now. But does anyone else feel like we’re being blatantly “puppeted” by Congress and the Bush administration?
